CALL FOR A COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT FOR A SHORT-TERM CONTRACT

The Navrongo Health Research Centre (NHRC), one of the three research centers of the Research
and Development Division (RDD) of the Ghana Health Service, is requesting applications from
Communications Consultants for a short-term contract, lasting between 6 – 12 calendar months.
“We’re looking for a communications specialist to optimize and retrain the Centre’s
communications, media relations and public relations department. Someone to help lead
storytelling for our organisation and partner projects with key skills in writing, graphic design,
social media, basic website updates and audio-visual renditions of the Centre’s key operations.

On completion of the contract, the Communications Consultant should position the Centre’s
Communications and PR Department to cover the following roles, amongst others:
• Strategic Communication Planning: Developing and implementing comprehensive
communication strategies to promote the Centre’s objectives and research findings.
• Media Relations: Building and maintaining strong relationships with media outlets to
ensure accurate and positive coverage of the Centre’s activities.
• Internal and External Communications: Ensuring effective communication within the
Centre and with external audiences through various channels, including newsletters, press
releases, opinionated editorials and social media.
• Event Management: Organizing and coordinating events such as conferences, seminars,
and public lectures to increase awareness and engagement with the Centre’s work.
• Digital Media Management: Overseeing the Centre’s online presence, including website
content and social media platforms, to ensure consistent and engaging communication.
• Crisis Communication: Developing and implementing crisis communication plans to
protect and enhance the Centre’s reputation during times of crisis.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, including
government bodies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and the
general public.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION
Essential: A first and advanced university degree, at least one of which must be in mass
communications, Journalism, public relations or other social sciences, public health or a related
field.
EXPERIENCE
Essential: At least (15) years of proven experience in the field of communications, journalism,
public relations in a wide spectrum of areas including health and/or the development sector.
The consultant must also have:
a) The experience of designing, testing, implementing, measuring and evaluating
communications interventions to support the achievement of particular outcomes.
b) A strong understanding of the political and policymaking environment and experience of
working with government and partners in countries and areas that relate with the
Research Centre.
c) Be a recognized expert in the area of work with a huge level of technical expertise and
professional credibility.
d) Practical working experience in journalism, media relations and developing multimedia
concepts to support the communications strategy of the Centre.
e) Experience of working with a multi-diverse workforce.
TECHNICAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
a) A high degree of technical expertise in communications, media and public relations.
b) Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including editorial, presentation skills
etc.
c) Excellent research, analytical, planning and organizing skills.
d) Ability to work independently to deadlines.
e) Proficient in written and spoken English.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Place of Assignment: The consultant will be expected to be on location at Navrongo in the Upper
East Region of Ghana for the entire contract period although there might be some travel time
assigned for field interviews and assignments as and when required.
