Community Health Planning and Services – Non- Communicable Diseases (CHPS-NCD)

General Objective

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of treating hypertension and depression at the CHPS level

 

Specific Objectives

  • To assess how community health nurses can diagnose people with hypertension and depression using supervised algorithms.

 

  • To assess how community health volunteers use behaviour activation to provide treatment for depressed patients at the CHPS level

 

  • To assess how psychotherapy and medication can be used to treat depression and hypertension at the CHPS level

African Youth – in Mind (Y – MIND )
  • To adapt and test a stepped care intervention that can be delivered through task-shifting to non-specialists and to evaluate
  1. Its feasibility and acceptability among youth in Ghana and Zimbabwe and
  2. the effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of implementing the intervention in reducing the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms
Validating Measures of Alcohol Use and Mental Health (Pre-DANG-Val).

Main Objective

  • The main aim of the study is to culturally validate the measurement of alcohol use disorder among young people in Ghana.

 

Specific Objectives

  • To ascertain the variability in ethanol content, container and pour sizes of beverages containing alcohol consumed in the Kassena Nankana districts of Ghana.

 

  • To estimate the amount of ethanol content in grammes in locally produced beverages containing alcohol and construct a ‘standard’ drinks table with local relevance to Ghana.

 

  • To assess the criterion validity and reliability of the Kasem/Nankani versions of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and consumption subscale (AUDIT-C), for the detection of the severity of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in a sample of young people aged between 12 and 24 years in the Navrongo district of Ghana.

 

  • To assess the comparative criterion validity and reliability of the (AUDIT), and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) for the detection of the severity of AUD or substance use in a young people.

 

  • To assess the criterion validity and reliability of the Kasem/Nankani versions of the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS), for the detection of depression and/or anxiety in a sample of young people.

The Scalability of a Faith Centre-based model to improve uptake of screening services for diabetes in rural Kassena-Nankana Districts of Northern Ghana

Main Objective:

To facilitate screening activities for diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors via faith centres in the Kasena Nankana Municipal and Kasena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region of Northern Ghana

Specific Objectives:

  • Asset mapping of religious organizations in the study area to identify faith leaders, parish nurses and peer leaders.

 

  • Explore community perceptions about type 2 diabetes and hypertension screening programs in the study area.

 

  • Develop and deliver medico-religious messaging about cardiovascular diseases (i.e. Type 2 diabetes and hypertension).

 

  • Implementation of Screening Services for type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

 

  • Programme Theory Development: Using Realist evaluation methodology, we aim to develop an initial programme theory.

 

  • Realist Evaluation of the Intervention: Qualitative interviews will be undertaken to test and evaluate the pilot and programme theory.

 

  • Final Stakeholder Consultation and dissemination with faith leaders, congregation members and healthcare professionals will be undertaken.
